Core 1 Community Snack

“Community snack ROCKED, today!”

No, not a quote from a Core 1 student…but from one of the many parents who have been moved by just how special this new “Project” is.

When it is your family's turn to bring community snack, you can either send ingredients for students to prepare (trail mix, cheese and crackers, fruit, etc.) or can bring something preprepared (sushi, frozen grapes, etc.). If you would like to make something with the students (sushi, a favorite family dish...) we would LOVE that, too! For items that take simple preparation, we are available and happy to help prepare snack. Our regular classroom volunteers have also been wonderful in assisting with this process.

Two family are assigned to each day. You can coordinate with the person on your day, or bring something on your own. If you misplaced your calendar, there is one by the door in the Magic Garden. Please bring enough for 20-40 small servings.

Snack is presented in one spot per room, for students to approach if they are hungry (rather than being passed around, or served). This way, students are encouraged to listen to their bodies and to visit the table only if they are hungry. We are also encouraging students to have clean hands before they eat or prepare the food, take one serving, and sit while they are eating. Students who choose "Food Prep" as a project eat after they have delivered snack to each room. Any extra snack is available during recess if students are still hungry after eating their snack from home.

Here are a few examples of what students have prepared so far:

Blood Oranges, Blackberries, Edamame,
and Almonds in Olive Oil and Rosemary

Strawberries and Whipped Cream

Brown Rice and Vegetable Sushi

Wheat Cereal O's

Apples, Carrots and Cheese

Thank you for your support with Community Snack!

It is a work in progress, that has proven to be a very special part of our day.
